Basic Daily Skin Care Routine & its Importance

Many people approach me with skin concerns & questions daily. People are totally confused about Skin Care and looking for answers. Often times we buy a product seeing a commercial and sometimes we are convinced that our skin routine is perfect when all be do is CTM(Cleanser-Toner-Moisturizer)!

It makes me mad when I see how marketing has eliminated the most important aspect of Skin care routine and that's the importance of ...

.....

Sunscreen!

Yes USE SPF PLEASE

Firstly,

CTM is enough is a Biggest Myth

C - Cleanser

T - Toner

M - Moisturizer

Like Seriously you call that a skin care routine?

In today's blog I will try to put a light on Simple skin care Routine techniques and reveal various myth.

I am sharing my secret on skin care routine and how it has actually helped many of my peeps by just using the right & minimal products

Remember ONE Rule!

Everyone's Skin is Unique and No one can understand what your skin needs better than you

so let's begin

1) CLEANSER

In simple Words something to clean your face. It can be plain water, Soap or face wash whatever suits you

Tip - Your skin should not feel tight after washing your face

Motive is to make your skin feel clean and fresh after washing your face. The Science behind it is,

Skin has a Barrier called "Acid Mantle" which protect your skin from Bacteria. This barrier is slightly acidic within a PH range 5.5 to 7  to kill the bacteria and not let the bacteria make your skin its permanent home. Cleanser's main aim is to not disrupt this Barrier.

Common Myths -

  1. a) Using Soap on the face is not good

False. If the Soap is Organic, non foaming and well within the range of 7

Go ahead and use Soap. Usually Soap are alkaline and PH is usually 11. So read about the product you purchase. Be wise.

  1. b) Face wash is the best

Again the foaming agent " Sodium lauryl Sulfate" will interfere with the skin Barrier as the foaming agent SLS has a higher PH.

Any Cleanser which does not alter Skin PH(5.5 - 7) is okay.

2) TONERS

Toners are usually use to restore the skin ph. Therefore if the cleanser does a good job then you can skip to the Sunscreen!

I usually do not believe in Toners as those available in market are Alcohol based and Harsh on Skin. If you want a little skin boost, hydration during summer use Alcohol free Toners.

3) SUNSCREEN

Body's largest Organ of the body is Skin

Lets get to the Basic's

Function of Skin -

1) Protection

2) Thermal Regulation

3) Absorption of Product (Skin Food)

4) Secretion of Sebum ( Skin lubricant )

Skin's Major Job is PROTECTION. When you apply SPF you are simply helping your skin to do it's function. So If you do not apply an SPF,

It doesn't mean that your skin will not protect you, but it will start producing Melanin which is needed by the Skin to continue its JOB.

Melanin is defense (protecting) pigment for skin. Therefore No SPF = Skin uses its mechanism to protect by producing Melanin and that's the reason you start looking Dull & Dark

Common Questions and Myths

1) Why do I need sunscreen when I stay indoor ?

Unfortunately Sunlight does not need permission to enter you home :(

You definitely need sun protection indoors. Windows and fluorescent bulbs can let the UV rays come through and that causes damage to your skin — so unless you are in a windowless room with no light, your skin needs SPF!

2) My skin looks oily when I use Sunscreen, so I don't use any :(

Well that's not worth a reason to avoid sunscreen. Pick a Matt finish SPF

3) Are there any organic / natural sunscreen ??

it's not possible to formulate a natural sunscreen

Many Brands have tried but it's not possible. So many who claims about natural SPF. Please be Cautious

Because natural ingredients available as a sun protection will not provide adequate sun protection.

Recommendations -

If you have -

i] Pigmentation / Freckles/ Sunburn / Melasma - Use SPF 60

ii] Normal Skin No pigmentation ( Oily to Combination) - Use SPF 30-50 Matt finish

iii] Normal skin No pigmentation ( Dry ) - Use a moisturizer before sunscreen Or Medicated Sunscreen

iv] Marks left post Acne (Post Inflammatory Hyper pigmentation Marks) -  Use SPF 60

4) MOISTURIZERS

Basic Food to your Skin. This determine the appearance of your Skin. Good food , Skin is happy , it glows whereas Bad/Insufficient food, Skin is Grumpy and it shows!

Again pick a moisturizer which fulfill your skin needs. A moisturizer is something that works on your Skin for 8 hours straight. So pick something that will actually help healing your skin

Its never one for all and all for one. Moisturizers are different for skin with pigmentation, acne marks and acne scars. Oil Based Serums are stand alone moisturizers whereas water based Serums may need additional moisturizer

I hope my first blog was helpful and worth reading. If you found it worth to share with your friends and family then please do not stop! Everyone needs this knowledge of Basic Skin Care Routine

My next blog will Focus on advanced need of skin on bi weekly basis.

Till then
